PREFACE
This book is a collection of English and American rhymes with commentaries and an English-Russian dictionary. It is intended for first year students of English phylology but may as well be used by school teachers, advanced schoolchildren and everybody who takes interest in English poetic folklore. Many of the rhymes collected here are published in this country for the first time.
The book contains popular nursery rhymes, limericks, traditional street calls, lullabies, children's games, tongue-twisters and proverbs which rhyme. Some of them are very ancient. Generation after generation knew and enjoyed them, for they give pleasure to both young and old.
Through reading and memorizing rhymes one enlarges one's vocabulary, learns patterns of the English language and remembers the pronunciation of words without too much trouble. Besides, the rhyme form is an excellent means of phonetic drill, both for beginners and advanced students.
The rhymes collected in the book are divided into 5 sections.
The first section contains nursery rhymes which are the special feature of English poetry for children. At the beginning of the section the reader will find rhymes which are easier to read and understand and are more appropriate for schoolchildren. Children, who respond so keenly to everything funny and fantastic, particularly like "nonsense rhymes". Equally funny and appealing to them are the numerous rhythmical combinations of sounds or words which make no sense at all and do not require any translation.
